February 6, 2023: The Republic of Ghana has joined the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) on 5th February, 2023. Ghana becomes the twelfth nation and the newest Member State to ascend to the DCO, an international organization founded to support countries in building their digital economies as an essential driver of sustainable growth and development.
The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, stated that Ghana shares the DCO’s vision of using technology to create opportunities for economic diversity and growth, and to empower the Ghanaian people, especially the youth, through digital and financial inclusion. She further indicated that Ghana looks forward to working with fellow DCO Member States and DCO Observers to share experience and collaborate in the fields of e-government as well as to foster investment in Ghana with member states.
H.E. Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General of the DCO, welcomed Ghana to the DCO and stated that Ghana is one of the leaders among African nations in adopting new technologies and policies, such as its Digital Finance Policy, that support new areas of development and bring positive benefits to the community.
On the mandate of the DCO, he stated that the DCO was created to encourage knowledge sharing and working together to realise the potential of digital technologies for advancing human well-being, and therefore believes that Ghana has many lessons to share with the DCO and the ecosystem of nations.
Considering that Ghana is well-established in utilising the power of communication and digital technologies to support economic growth, Ghana is expected to share its experience and expertise with the other Member States.
The DCO, which focuses on digital economy initiatives supporting youth, startup entrepreneurs, and women, now has 12 Member States with a combined GDP of over USD 2 trillion and a population of nearly 600 million. With 70 percent of future economic growth set to be digital, DCO Member States provide a valuable market opportunity to investors and entrepreneurs alike.
