Technical Information
The NCA grants the Terrestrial Fibre Licence to enable Licensees to build, own, operate, and maintain a nationwide or metropolitan terrestrial fibre optic cable network infrastructure on the land or through any terrestrial water body using approved transport facilities such as microwave, satellite, etc. The use of microwave and satellite, other than fibre optics, are allowed in terrains such as streams, hills, or mountains where the deployment of fibre optics may prove difficult.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) built the first commercial terrestrial fibre optic cable in Ghana. It is currently owned by GRIDCO Limited, a power distribution company. All Mobile Network Operators own their terrestrial fibre network within regional capitals and rely extensively on the GRIDCO fibre for backhaul between the regions.

Currently, there is a total cable length of 12,984 kilometers and 1,797 Gb-lit capacity in Ghana.
