UMaT Computer Science and Engineering Students Visit NCA for Practical Learning Experience

July 7, 2026: The National Communications Authority (NCA) hosted Level 300 Computer Science and Engineering students from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at the NCA Tower in Accra as part of the University’s practical industry exposure programme.

The visit provided the students with the opportunity to bridge classroom theory with real-world applications by gaining first-hand insight into Ghana’s communications regulatory environment and the technologies that support it.

The programme featured an interactive session, led by the NCA’s Information Technology Division, where the students were introduced to the Authority’s internal ICT infrastructure and data centre operations. The session, facilitated by Rimaskeb Cobson-Cobbold (Deputy Manager) and Bernard Bani (Senior Manager), introduced the students to the NCA’s data centre infrastructure and internal network environment, demonstrating how concepts such as Local Area Networks (LANs), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), switching, routing, and network security are applied in managing enterprise ICT systems.

Students also received an overview of the mandate of the National Communications Authority, its regulatory responsibilities, and the key regulatory tools and systems employed to oversee Ghana’s electronic communications sector including telecommunications, broadcasting, radiocommunications and related services.

The Consumer Affairs Division further engaged the students on consumer rights and responsibilities within the communications ecosystem. The session highlighted the importance of making informed choices, understanding service expectations, and using the Authority’s complaints-resolution channels. Students were encouraged to report unresolved complaints through the NCA’s toll-free Consumer Contact Centre on 0800 303030 after first seeking redress from their respective service providers.

As part of the educational visit, the students embarked on a guided tour of a number of the Authority’s critical operational facilities. These included the NCA Data Centre, where they observed the practical implementation of enterprise ICT systems; the Broadcasting Monitoring Centre (BMC), the Common Platform, and the NCA Computer Emergency Response Team (NCA-CERT).

The visit forms part of the NCA’s ongoing stakeholder engagement and public education initiatives, aimed at strengthening collaboration with academia while exposing future ICT professionals to the practical application of communications regulation and technology in Ghana.
