KNUST Telecommunications Engineering Students Gain Firsthand Insight into Communications Regulation at NCA
June 19, 2026: The National Communications Authority (NCA) hosted students of the Telecommunications Engineering Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at the NCA Tower as part of an educational study visit aimed at providing practical insights into Ghana’s communications regulatory environment.
Questions about aviation interference, spectrum allocation, and the conversations surrounding Significant Market Power (SMP) dominated discussions as the students were taken through a presentation by Mr. Kwame Tetteh Larnor, Deputy Manager at the Engineering Division. He provided insights into how frequency bands are assigned to telecommunications operators and broadband service providers in Ghana. The session also highlighted the importance of spectrum as a finite national resource and the regulatory measures employed by the Authority to ensure its efficient management and utilisation.
The discussions also provided the students with a broader understanding of the mandate of the National Communications Authority (NCA), its regulatory responsibilities, and its role in overseeing telecommunications, broadcasting, and related services in Ghana. The session further highlighted the Authority’s efforts in promoting a safe and secure digital ecosystem through cybersecurity awareness initiatives and the work of the NCA Computer Emergency Response Team (NCA-CERT), which supports the prevention, detection, and response to cyber threats within the communications sector.
The visit formed part of the Authority’s efforts to provide students with practical industry exposure and deepen their understanding of the technical and regulatory frameworks that underpin the communications sector.
