NCA Holds Digital Audio Broadcasting Sensitisation for Dealers and Manufacturers of Electronic Communications Equipment

17^th August 2023: The National Communications Authority held a sensitisation workshop for Dealers and Manufacturers of Electronic Communications Equipment on           17^th August, 2023 at the NCA Tower.

The engagement was aimed at encouraging them to manufacture and procure Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) receivers for public use. This also formed part of preparations towards the implementation of the DAB Service in Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Joe Anokye, the Director General of the NCA, highlighted that the Authority, faced with an influx of requests for spectrum acquisition and recognising its finite nature, initiated research to discover innovative approaches for ensuring spectrum efficiency. He stated that the introduction of DAB would establish Ghana as the pioneer within the ECOWAS sub-region and the fourth country in Africa to adopt this technology. This significant achievement, he emphasised, would unlock numerous opportunities for Ghana in the digital economy and offer Dealers and Manufacturers the opportunity to enhance their revenue streams.

Mr. Anokye assured the audience that the Authority has taken care of all expenses linked to the implementation of the DAB trial. He expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Manufacturers and Dealers and urged stakeholders to unleash their creativity, as DAB has the potential to be integrated into various communication devices, vehicles, and diverse formats.

As essential stakeholders in the DAB service, Acting Director of Engineering at the NCA, Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, entreated the Dealers and Manufacturers to procure DAB receivers that conform to the ETSI 103 461 V1 2.2 standard and bear the Digital Radio Certification mark subsequent to the DAB trial launch. He also educated the stakeholders about the diverse technical aspects of the service, which do not only provide excellent audio quality but also supports multiple radio channels.

The commencement of trials for Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) will be in Accra and Kumasi. DAB ushers in a new era of radio broadcasting, harnessing digital signals to deliver enhanced sound quality, expanded station choices, and interactive features. Overcoming the limitations of traditional analogue FM radio, DAB promises a transformative and engaging listening experience.
