NCA Organises 4th Conformance and Interoperability (C&I) Training Programme for ITU Members in the African Region

Accra, November 16, 2021: The National Communications Authority (NCA), with support from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is hosting the fourth Conformance and Interoperability (C&I) Training Programme for sister members of the ITU in the African Region. The training, which is being held virtually, started on 15th November and will end on 19th November, 2021. There are about forty-nine (49) participants from across the continent taking part in the training.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Ezer Osei Yeboah-Boateng, Deputy Director General, Technical Operations (DDG-TO) at the NCA, stated that as regulators of the telecommunications industry, “we cannot afford to be passive in ensuring that electronic communication equipment such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops are used in accordance with regulatory requirements specified by the ITU”. He continued by stating that because the scope of communication services continues to expand by the minute, resulting in the use of electronic communication equipment for a variety of services, regulators must ensure that the electronic equipment that consumers use to access various telecommunication services are tested to ensure compliance with international health, environmental, and safety standards.

The ITU Regional Director for Africa, Madam Chali Tumelo, noted during her opening remarks that with global progress and increased demand for telecommunications equipment, the issue of counterfeit electronic equipment has become a growing one, wreaking havoc on innovation and preventing investment that could redirect resources. Additionally, she noted that conformity and interoperability of electronic devices will assist in maintaining safety and addressing the issue of illicit use of information technology services resulting in economic loss.

The training will focus on the regulatory framework, requirements to set up a basic C&I Laboratory and the testing domains of Type Approval Laboratories in Specific Absorption Rate, Radio Frequency and Signalling, Digital Terrestrial Television  and Electromagnetic Field, including specifications and parameters for the specific laboratories.
