September 10, 2026 – The National Communications Authority (NCA) on Thursday, 10^th September, 2026, hosted a 100 girls for a mentorship workshop as part of the Girls-In-ICT Programme. 

The event, held at the NCA Tower and organised by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations (MoCDTI), aimed at exposing the participants to the wide range of career opportunities within the communications and technology sector. It also sought to deepen their appreciation of the importance of ICT and digital skills in education, employment, entrepreneurship and everyday life. 

Welcoming the girls, the Director in charge of Procurement at the NCA, Mrs. Rahmata Issahaq-Pelpuo, expressed the Authority’s pleasure in hosting the mentorship session as part of its continued support for the Girls-In-ICT Programme. She reaffirmed the NCA’s commitment to initiatives that promote the participation and inclusion of women and girls in ICT.

Mrs. Issahaq-Pelpuo encouraged the participants to remain determined in pursuing careers in ICT, particularly when faced with challenges and urged them to move beyond the perception that the field was reserved for boys and men. 

‘‘We want to whip up your interest and ensure that you move away from the usual thought that ICT is for men alone. If boys are in ICT, we can be there with them,’’ she said. 

Some female members of the Authority’s Management also took turns at encouraging and inspiring the girls. The Deputy Director for Research, Innovation, Policy and Strategy, Mrs. Babara Osei-Annancy, challenged the participants to discard misconceptions that ICT was the preserve of boys and men. She encouraged them to embrace determination, hard work, confidence and excellence, while overcoming barriers associated with laziness and gender inequality.

The Deputy Director for Corporate Affairs, Ms. Joyce G. A. Abbey, urged the girls to make productive use of ICT tools, particularly, mobile phones, in order to acquire knowledge and develop skills that would offer them an advantage in today’s digital world. 

On her part, the Deputy Director in charge of Human Resources, Madam Grace Prempeh, advised the participants to guard against phone addiction and ensure that technology, while useful, did not become disruptive to their personal development and wellbeing. The Deputy Director for Engineering, Mrs. Naa Amorkor Asihene, emphasised the importance of hard work and determination for succeeding in any chosen field within the industry. 

Speaking at the event, the Planning Officer at the MoCDTI, Ms. Gertrude Aseye Asieni, expressed the Ministry’s appreciation to the NCA for its continued commitment and support towards the Girls-In-ICT Programme over the years.

She noted that the opportunity would provide the girls with invaluable exposure to organisations within the ICT ecosystem and enable them to interact with professionals in the technology industry.  

The girls, selected from the Volta and Upper East Regions, had the opportunity to interact with and be mentored by female professionals from various Divisions within the Authority including  Caroline Iddi (Information Technology Division), Rachel Austin (Consumer Affairs Division), Nana Yaa Owusu-Adansi (Engineering Division), Loveland Akusika Sarbah (Regulatory Administration Division) and Princess Lois Tellar (Director General’s Secretariat).

The mentorship sessions provided participants with practical insights into the work of the NCA and encouraged them to explore opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and beyond. As part of the programme, the girls received souvenirs to support their education and personal development.
