September 8, 2026 – A seven-member delegation from Ericsson has paid a courtesy call on the National Communications Authority (NCA) at the NCA Tower in Accra. 

The delegation, led by Mr Patrick Johansson, President and Head of Market Area, Europe, Middle East and Africa, was received by the Deputy Director General for Technical Operations at the NCA, Mr Suleman Salifu, together with the Deputy Director General for Managerial Operations, Mrs. Etta Mosore, on behalf of the Director General of the NCA, Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko.

Welcoming the delegation, Mr. Salifu highlighted the NCA’s mandate to regulate Ghana’s communications sector in a manner that promotes fairness, competition, innovation, service quality and consumer protection. He noted that as Ghana’s digital agenda continues to evolve, the Authority remains focused on ensuring that communications services are delivered in a secure, reliable and efficient manner. 

He stated that the NCA’s responsibility is not only to create the right regulatory environment for investment and innovation, but also to ensure that consumers and businesses benefit meaningfully from the services deployed by licensed operators. He added that the Authority would continue to engage industry players and technology partners in line with its mandate to support a resilient and forward-looking communications ecosystem. 

The courtesy call provided an opportunity for discussions on a number of areas, including 5G deployment, Quality of Service (QoS), cybersecurity, network resilience, sustainable energy solutions and enterprise connectivity for critical sectors such as oil and gas, mining and ports. 

Speaking on 5G deployment, Mr. Salifu noted that the rollout of 5G services in Ghana would continue to be guided by strong regulatory oversight, clear performance expectations and measurable service outcomes. He said the Authority’s interest is to ensure that 5G delivers real value to consumers, businesses and the wider economy. 

He further noted that the licence conditions for 5G provide for seventy percent (70%) population coverage by March 2027 and said the NCA would continue to strengthen compliance monitoring to ensure that coverage and service quality obligations are met. He emphasised that as new technologies are introduced, the Authority will remain focused on issues such as coverage, quality, resilience, cybersecurity, and consumer experience. 

Mr. Salifu also touched on the importance of national emergency communications and the need to ensure that communications infrastructure remains robust, responsive, and secure. He said the Authority would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to support a communications environment that is fit for Ghana’s digital future. 

Mrs. Mosore also addressed the delegation and noted the importance of partnerships that support knowledge sharing, capacity building, and innovation. She said collaborations with industry stakeholders should contribute to Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda and help strengthen the country’s preparedness for emerging technologies. 

On behalf of Ericsson, Mr. Johansson said the visit was significant as Ericsson marks 30 years of operations in Ghana, coinciding with the NCA’s 30th anniversary. He said Ericsson was engaging partners as part of efforts to support Ghana’s digital development and contribute to the strengthening of the country’s digital foundation.

Ms Majda Lahlou Kassi, Customer Unit Head for West and Southern Africa, described the direction of Ghana’s 5G licensing as a positive development and reaffirmed Ericsson’s willingness to support Ghana through knowledge sharing and capacity building, including in areas such as cybersecurity, resilient networks, Artificial Intelligence and digital skills development. 

Both sides expressed their willingness to deepen collaboration and share expertise in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities in Ghana’s communications ecosystem. As part of the visit, the Ericsson delegation presented the NCA with a commemorative token to mark the two organisations’ 30th anniversaries in Ghana.
