NCA Director General Calls for Collective Action in Safeguarding Consumers in the Digital Space
October 2, 2025 – The Ag. Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, has emphasised the shared responsibility of protecting consumers in an era of rapid digital transformation. He made the call on Wednesday, 1st October, 2025, at the launch of the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, held at the Burma Hall under the theme “A Safe, Informed, and Accountable Digital Space.”
Speaking during a high-level panel discussion, Rev. Ing. Fianko revealed that the NCA has established a Communications Industry Joint Working Group to tackle critical challenges facing the sector. The group’s mandate covers technology-related and cyber incidents such as data breaches, phishing scams, and identity theft, while also addressing wider consumer concerns including service quality, billing accuracy, and the health and safety of telecom infrastructure.

He further urged citizens to take proactive steps in safeguarding their digital lives by exercising caution online. “Avoid suspicious links, verify before you click, and make use of available resources for guidance,” he advised. He also indicated that a single point of vulnerability can compromise entire systems, making cybersecurity awareness not just an individual responsibility but a national imperative. Stressing the importance of individual vigilance, Rev. Ing. Fianko added: “If you don’t remember anything else from this discussion, remember this: you have a duty to yourself and to your organisation to be security aware. Threat actors will always exploit the most vulnerable point. Make sure that weakness is not you.”
The event, which brought together stakeholders across government, industry, and civil society, was attended by the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama; the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations (MoCDTI), Hon. Samuel Nartey George; Minister for Interior, Alhaji Mohammed-Mubarak; as well as heads of regulatory institutions and sector agencies. Their presence underscored government’s strong commitment to building a secure, resilient, and consumer-centered digital ecosystem.
