VSAT Licences

Overview
VSAT is a two-way satellite ground station with a dish antenna that is smaller than 3.8 meters. It is a service that allows for the transmission of narrowband data (for example, point of sale transactions using credit cards) or broadband data (for the provision of satellite internet access to remote locations. Such licences are granted to internet service providers in four classifications:
  1. VSAT for Public Use (Urban)
  2. VSAT for Public Use( Sub-Urban)
  3. VSAT for Public Use (Rural)
  4. VSAT for Private/Corporate Use
Technical Information
VSAT Network (DTH)
VSAT Network (DTH) refers to Ground Station Satellite Network Providers who deploy Satellite Earth Stations (particularly VSATs) using a hub (in or outside the geographical landscape of Ghana) to enable the provision of telecommunications services to the public.

There are three (3) classes;
  1. CLASS 1: Refers to the establishment, operation and provision of a VSAT Network in Ghana, with a minimum of 101 terminals.
  2. CLASS 2: Refers to the establishment, operation and provision of a VSAT Network in Ghana, with a minimum of 51 terminals and a maximum of 100 terminals.
  3. CLASS 3: Refers to the establishment, operation and provision of a VSAT Network in Ghana, with a minimum of 50 terminals.
VSAT Terminal
The following are the VSAT classifications other than Network whose fees are charged per terminal.
  1. VSAT for Private use refers to the deployment of (a) VSAT terminal(s) to enable the provision of telecommunications services for personal use/ to aid the operations of a corporate body.
  2. VSAT for Public use refers to the deployment of (a) VSAT terminal(s) to enable the provision of telecommunications services to the public in urban areas.
  3. VSAT for Public use (Rural) refers to the deployment of (a) VSAT terminal(s) to enable the provision of telecommunications services to the public in rural areas. Rural area refers to any other area which is not within the areas defined under urban and sub-urban per the attached classification of communities in Ghana.
  4. VSAT for Educational Use refers to the deployment of (a) VSAT terminal(s) to enable the provision of telecommunications services for educational use/ to aid the operations of an educational Institution.
